Philemona Williamson is a painter and art educator whose narrative paintings deal with topics of gender, race and adolescence. She has been exhibiting her work for over 25 years at the June Kelly Gallery in NYC, and in 2017-2018 held a mid-career retrospective at the Montclair Art Museum in NJ. She is the recipient of numerous awards, including the Joan Mitchell Foundation, Pollock/Krasner, National Endowment for the Arts, and the New York Foundation for the Arts. She was recently awarded a New Jersey  State Council on the Arts Fellowship grant for painting. Her work has been shown in solo and group exhibitions throughout the United States and abroad, with her most recent show opening April 8, 2022 at the June Kelly Gallery in NYC.

She is represented in numerous private and public collections, including the Montclair Art Museum, NJ; the Kalamazoo Art Institute, MI; the Mint Museum of Art, Charlotte, NC; Smith College Museum of Art, Northampton, MA; Hampton University Museum, VA; Sheldon Art Museum, Lincoln, NE; Mott-Warsh Art Collection, Flint, MI, and AT&T. Her public work is part of the MTA Arts For Transit Program located at the Livonia Ave Station, the MTA Poetry In Motion project, and she created a mosaic mural in the Glenwood Campus School for the NYC School Authority. She has been an artist-in residence at the Joan Mitchell Center in New Orleans and the Millay Colony for the Arts in Austerlitz, NY, and currently teaches painting at Pratt Institute and Hunter College in New York City.
