Margarita Simon Guillory is a chemist turned religious studies scholar. She is Professor of Religion and Director of the African American and Black Diaspora Studies program at Boston University and has played a pivotal role in the study of religion in digital contexts. Guillory examines ways that religion and emerging digital technologies serve as vital outlets for the expression of Black identities and foster a sense of freedom that people of African descent might not have in their offline realities. Thus, Blackness and technology are inextricably linked.

She is the author of Africana Religion in the Digital Age, Social and Spiritual Transformation in African American Spiritual Churches, and Esotericism in African American Religious Experience. She has published articles in the Journal of Gnostic Studies, The Black Scholar, Culture and Religion, and Pastoral Psychology. Her work has been featured in The Atlantic, TheGrio, The Conversation, and The Boston Globe.
