With more than 25 years of distinguished experience in biblical studies and religion, Shively T. J. Smith stands at the forefront of her field as a respected scholar, accomplished author, and in-demand public educator. She is widely respected as a teacher and preacher across mainline and independent Christian traditions. While recognized as an ordained elder in the African Methodist Episcopal Church, she regularly serves congregations of the United Methodist, Presbyterian, Episcopalian, Baptist, Pentecostal, Disciples of Christ, United Church of Christ, and many other denominations.
Formally trained at premier institutions—including Emory University (where she became the first Black woman to earn a PhD in New Testament), Columbia Theological Seminary, Boston University, Fisk University, and with advanced study at Oxford (UK)—the breadth of her formation shapes every aspect of her work. She is currently an associate professor at Boston University School of Theology.
Smith brings a rare depth of expertise across biblical commentaries, monographs, and study Bibles. Her scholarship, publications, and national media appearances reflect a commitment to making God’s Word accessible, relevant, and transformative for today’s communities. This extensive perspective gives her unmatched insight into the evolution of study Bibles over the past 25–30 years, positioning her to identify needs and opportunities that remain unaddressed for a new generation of readers. She is the author of multiple books and a sought-after scholar, teacher, and preacher in academic, religious, and civic arenas. Her media portfolio includes appearances on the History Channel, C-SPAN, Book Review Series, and at the Smithsonian African American Museum, to name a few.
