Stylist, educator, upcyclist, sustainable fashion savant, TV/film costumer, and storyteller Carmia Marshall has worked on some of Hollywood’s biggest blockbusters, such as “Ocean’s 8,” where she star dressed Rihanna; George C. Wolfe’s movie adaption of August Wilson’s “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” for Netflix, star dressing Viola Davis; and Darren Aronofsky’s “Noah,” star dressing Russell Crowe. For fashion-driven plots–where clothes are a major “character” in the movie–her credits include Tracy Oliver’s television remake of “First Wives Club”, in which Carmia dressed music legend Jill Scott. She also worked on the iconic “Sex in the City 2,” where she dressed male principals and other cast members.

While working on major film and television shows, Carmia was co-owner/vice-president of a fashion label called Sistahs of Harlem. She is co-author of three books by Sistahs of Harlem: T-shirt Makeovers: 20 Transformations to Fabulous Fashions (Glitterati 2006), Denim Mania: 25 Stylish Ways to Transform Your Jeans (St. Martin’s Griffin 2008), and Chic Sweats: 22 Ways to Transform and Restyle Your Sweatshirts (St. Martin’s Griffin 2009). These fashion/craft titles take an eco-friendly approach to remaking items in your wardrobe. Managing Sistahs of Harlem, she served celebrities such as Erykah Badu and Alicia Keys, pulling clothing from the line for special appearances.

Carmia worked with Stacey London and Clinton Kelly as an off-camera stylist for “What Not to Wear”, one of the longest running makeover reality shows on network television, where Carmia discovered the magic of wardrobe transformation. While working with busy professionals, she realized that some didn’t have time to shop for themselves or develop an awareness of the items required to maintain a well-rounded wardrobe and stand ready for any occasion. This led to her work as a stylist for Style for Hire, Stacey London’s personal shopping company dedicated to creating the perfect wardrobe based on body type, personality and lifestyle.

Carmia has made television appearances on VH1’s “Can’t Get a Date,” sharing useful tips with singles who need fashion advice, and given lectures on how to start a business to the National Foundation of Teaching Entrepreneurship students. Whether it’s via styling, books, television, film or personal shopping, Carmia uses clothing as a way to share information. A proud Howard University graduate (cum laude, B.A. in Communications), she blends high style with mindful living, and has built a multifaceted career spanning television, film, fashion design, personal styling, and wellness—all rooted in creativity, care, and cultural awareness.

To Carmia, getting dressed is an act of healing, communication, and self-awakening. She brings this philosophy to everything she touches—from private clients and creative collaborations to workshops, gatherings, and other offerings at her ex-urban sanctuary for style, wellness, and intentional living, Sunflowers and Lavender. Carmia lives in Brooklyn with her husband, artist Josama.
