Writer and producer, Doreen Spicer is a native New Yorker of African American and Puerto Rican descent who set sights on Hollywood to offer her multi-cultural perspective to the entertainment business and has found success. Spicer created and independently produced the international hit tween sitcom, The Wannabes Starring Savvy, which follows six teens who want to be pop-stars. As showrunner and executive producer, Spicer was also instrumental in licensing the show in over 100 countries. Debuting first in Australia, March 2010, the show is currently airing on HBO Latin America & HBO Asia, Germany’s Super RTL, in Austria, NOGA Israel, Turkey, and The Netherlands. The Wannabes is currently airing in the US on Starz Kids & Family and is still the number one children’s show on HBO Latin America. The musical act, Savvy, later signed their first major record deal with Cash Money Records. In addition to writing and producing, Doreen will make her directorial debut July 2013 with Playground Politix, a short film about girls battle-dancing boys over space at the playground. Doreen’s intentions are to ultimately encourage kids to get active.
Following Spicer’s success on Disney Channel’s critically acclaimed animated series, The Proud Family, where she is credited as “Developed by” and “Supervising Producer”, Doreen developed and wrote the musically driven-film, Jump In!, which broke television cable records with 8.2 million viewers and deemed “the highest rate MOW ever” by Variety. The film was nominated for a Humanitas Prize in 2007. Doreen lent her fresh perspective and Puerto Rican heritage to create another animated series, Coqui Loco, also for Disney Channel. Doreen began her career as a writer’s intern on the popular ABC sitcom, Hangin’ with Mr. Cooper and continued to hone her craft on shows as The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, Martin, The Jamie Foxx Show, and The Cosbys.
Having established credits in all three areas, television, animation and film, Doreen Spicer is continually developing more multi-cultural and flavorful projects in teen, tween and family entertainment under the auspices of her company, Spicerack Productions, Inc.
